The beaches of Ras Al Hadd, Ras Al Junayz and Masirah Islands serve as a protected breeding ground for several species of marine turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs. Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Leatherback and Green turtles are species known to frequent the area.
A permit is necessary to visit the official nesting grounds. Our local tour operator takes care of the formalities and arranges trips to these sites.
The gentle creatures home in on the same spot every year and at night visitors can witness the turtles arriving at the beach to lay their eggs. The hatchlings emerge and struggle back to the water at daybreak.
Turtles can be seen at virtually any time of the year, though the best time to see large numbers is from June to November.
